my other home is the bookstore
posted on June 6th, 2008 (09:49 AM) in Sell Out PixieI'm bored. When I'm bored, I post. So now I will tell the tales of the books I'm half-done reading (books, plural, coz I'm a muti-tasker like that, and I leave them around the house and in my bags, so the ones nearest my hands, I read.)
I mostly got these books in Palma Hall. Seriously love that place. New books at 200 and 400 only, old ones at 100. Then, comic books and graphic novels at 700 each (I wanted to buy the sandman series, but that would total to 7k and I'm poor, so, no.)

The Screwtape Letters and Screwtape Proposes a Toast by C.S. Lewis
This one, I'm almost done with. Mainly coz it's pretty thin.
It's about the letters of Screwtape, some big hotshot in hell, to his nephew, Wormwood (I kept picturing in my head the rat in Harry Potter), who is an amateur tempter.
I love how it's religious but not preachy.
And yes, I've only just discoved C.S. Lewis is a Christian writer.

Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick
Alternate universe: what if the Axis won during WWII, how different would things be?
It's actually pretty interesting. Only I keep forgetting to finish it. Now it's stuck in the box where I can't get it. Yet.

Life of Pi by Yann Martel
I haven't gone beyond the first few chapters yet, so I can't really say. The whole thing about religion is making me bored with the book. I like the parts about the zoo though.
More when I actually finish it.

Smokes and Mirrors by Neil Gaiman
It's a collection of short stories. I'm not done with them all, I have only read a few. I actually love the story in the introduction, The Wedding Present. Among the other stories I liked were:
Changes - What would happen if someone finds a cure for cancer, but side effects include gender change.
We Can Get Them For You Wholesale - (initially got me confused with Philip Dick's short story, We Can Remember Them for You Wholesale a.k.a. Total Recall the movie) A bargain-obssessed man who decides to get a killer-for-hire after being two-timed by his fiance.
Snow, Glass, Apples - I love twisted fairy tales. This one is obviously about Snow White.

Snow Crash by Neil Stephenson
I remember this book was a friend's favorite, and since I loved Cryptonomicon, why not try.
Snow crash is what you see on your computer's monitor after you get hit by a virus. I haven't actually finished chapter one yet, so I can't really say how it is. So far, so good. But I think I like Cryptonomicon more, even though I think he flat-lined with the ending.
The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov
The devil comes with his troupe and a cat to Soviet Union, and the amazing happens. I keep repeating reading the book from the start (what?) whenever I had to put it down for a while. The little details given a few or so pages before, would suddenly make a ligh bulb in my head go *ting*, and I forget them when I put the book down. So I never finish, but always start.
Gah! What an airhead this person.
So far, these are the ones that I still rotate reading. I have got to finish them first before I start buying new ones again. I want to buy The Host by Stephenie Meyer, and In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, but only after I get these done. Impulse control!
Always starting, never finishing. Pfbbt!
p.s.
Any interesting reads you have? Give me an idea what to look for next.

My other favorite books are Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk (mostly because it has a lot of quotable quotes, and I loved the movie), books by Amy Tan, Patricia Cornwell (if you love CSI. Her books should be cheap in booksale) annnnd my absolutely most favorite book (as of this moment, which I highly suggest you read!) is Jonathan Foer's Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. :) I guarantee you'll fall in love with it. Oh! And Paul Auster's In the Country of Last Things is also nice :) Dark, but nice...

I love fight club din. I liked virgin suicides, so yeah, I think I will try middlesex. And I think my sis has that Foer's book.
Thanks girl!

Re: Foer--that book I loved from start to finish. Each chapter kasi (in my opinion) can stand alone as a short story and it will still be a wonderful read. Apart from that, the characters are all quirky and memorable. If you're for a light, heartwarming but non-chicklit read, you'll like it.
I have yet to read Virgin Suicides though. I didn't like the movie, so I didn't buy the book. O.o Highly recommended ba?

I liked Virgin Suicides. Not super wow, but good.

Yung Life of Pi, nasimulan ko rin, pero after a few pages nabore na ako. Pinahiram ko nalang muna para hindi masayang.
I've never read a Neil Gaiman pero mukhang interesting yung Smokes and Mirrors. Do you also like to read short stories?
Pati ung Fountainhead niya.

Short stories, yes. The most my attention span can focus on din. hehe... i liked Philipi K. Dick Reader, and yung short stories ni Ray Bradburry, forgot the title.
